Designed by Practise:
I’m a member of a museum publishing email list, MuseumPubs, hosted by the University of Chicago Graham School, co-organizers of the National Museum Publishing Seminar, a great biennial conference (their July 2020 edition, for which I actually designed all the materials and planned to speak at, is now sadly cancelled of course). In a recent message, Jennifer Snodgrass, Managing Editor, MFA Publications (Boston), said something that really struck me: “Museum publishing extends the work of museums outward in time and space. If you value the thought that goes into curating museum collections and exhibitions, publications expand on it, preserve it, and make it available to those who may never encounter the museum in person. More important now than ever, when the buildings are closed. Our books are still open!” I loved that statement so much that I paraphrased it as a general reminder for us all right now. An encouraging expression of solidarity with readers, writers, editors, artists, designers, publishers, prepress/production staff, printers, binders, and independent booksellers everywhere. Books are still open!
