“Before modern medicine the suffering by illness and disease was a very real, and all too prevalent, part of everyday life. The Shakers felt a commitment to the care of their people and used all the folklore and common sense available to them in the care of the sick. Their journals speak of “consecrated industry” which described their medicinal herb business. Their devotion to detail made it inevitable that this was an area in which they would excel. Inadvertently this became the basis of their very substantial prosperity.
MEDICAL CLAIMS ARE ROM SHAKER LITERATURE AND ARE BASED ON FOLKLORE AND HAVE NOT BEEN CHECKED AGAINST THE PRESENT BODY OF MEDICAL INFORMATION. MANY OF THE HERBS ARE POISONOUS AND HARMFUL.
THIS IS NOT A DO-IT-YOURSELF HANDBOOK.”
