Suitable for those with a bit of bookbinding experience.
Learn the techniques of traditional edge decoration from book & paper conservator and educator Abigail Bainbridge (Bainbridge Conservation).
In this workshop participants will learn how to prepare text block edges and carry out two edge-colouring techniques, sprinkling and solid colours, using acrylic, watercolour, and (the traditional) wheat starch paste with dry powdered pigment, as well as optional burnishing at the end for a shiny finish.
We will discuss the historic purpose of edge decoration, what can go wrong, and how it can be adapted to individual projects. We will provide dummy text blocks but participants are welcome to bring along books that they would like to experiment with.
Please note that the workshop will be a mix of demonstrations and hands-on experiments, and for some techniques, time-consuming sanding is required, so individuals may not finish a whole project during the class time.
