London Centre for Book Arts is an independent, artist-run studio. Our unique mission is to promote and foster books arts in the UK through collaboration and skills sharing, and by offering affordable access to hard-to-find machines and equipment.
Since we opened our doors, we have managed without grants or outside funding; a challenge at times, particularly in London where rent is a premium and affordable artist studios are under constant threat.
We rely on income from our workshop programme, membership and shop to cover all overheads and operations of the studio, including our wide-ranging public programme such as:
- Residencies – including the annual Wynkyn de Worde Graduate Residency Award run in partnership with the Wynkyn de Worde Society; and an annual residency awarded to two exhibitors at the East London Printmakers Festival of Print
- Advice sessions and surgeries
-
The LCBA library, a 500+ collection of books about books, printing, design, and related subjects that we hope to one day make publicly accessible
-
Exhibitions, book launches, and other events celebrating book arts and alternative publishing
-
A6 BOOKS was launched in 2017 with the aim of promoting and distributing books, zines and publications by emerging artists – to create a distribution point for independent and often self-published works that would otherwise have a hard time getting into circulation.
